Adh-Dhariyat 51:13

يَوْمَ هُمْ عَلَى ٱلنَّارِ يُفْتَنُونَ

“[It is] the Day they will be tormented over the Fire”

Saheeh International

Essence

Their mocking question is answered with a picture: the Day they are held over the Fire like metal in a goldsmith's flame.

A reflection

The fire shows what was gold

A woman takes her late grandmother's bracelet to a jeweller to have it resized. He weighs it, frowns, and scrapes a tiny mark on the inside. Then he puts a corner of it to the flame. Underneath a thin skin of gold, the metal is brass. The bracelet has looked like gold for sixty years. One moment in the fire told the truth.

The verb in this ayah, yuftanūn, comes from that workshop. The Arabs said fatantu al-dhahab: I put the gold into the fire. The metal melted, and the good separated from the impure. One commentary gives the root's origin as melting the substance so that its adulteration shows. Another says the origin of fitna is testing, as one heats gold in the fire to learn its quality. The black lava fields, whose stones look scorched, were even called fatīn. This picture is established.

Most commentaries explain the ayah plainly: they will be burned, punished in the Fire. One early commentator chooses that reading precisely because of the gold: they will be burned in it as gold is burned.

But the image keeps its first edge. The fire of the goldsmith does not create anything. It reveals. Whatever the metal really was, the heat makes plain.

That is what the guessers of this passage face. Their whole life had a coating: confident words, mocking questions, a public face. On that Day the coating meets the flame.

The question for us is not whether we look like gold today. Most of us manage that much. It is what our metal is underneath, in the private places no one scratches. Allah sees the inside of the bracelet now.

Ask Him tonight to make you gold all the way through, so that whatever fire you meet only shows what is already true.
