Adh-Dhariyat 51:34
مُّسَوَّمَةً عِندَ رَبِّكَ لِلْمُسْرِفِينَ
“Marked in the presence of your Lord for the transgressors."”
Saheeh International
Essence
Every stone was marked in His presence for the ones who had gone beyond all limits; nobody is anonymous before the Lord.
A reflection
No one is lost in the crowd
Musawwamatan ʿinda rabbika: marked, in your Lord's presence. The commentaries give several pictures of the marking. Some say each stone bore the name of the one it would strike. One early report says each was sealed with a spot of colour, black on white or white on black. Others say they were marked as stones of punishment, unlike any stone of this world. One classical scholar adds that they were created for that purpose from the start, unlike ordinary stones made for building.
Whichever picture you hold, the point is the same. Nothing about this was random. Each stone had its address before it left.
That says something unsettling about how we imagine ourselves. In a crowd, we feel invisible. In a big city, a big company or a big online audience, it feels as if no one tracks what one person does. The ego enjoys that anonymity. It whispers that wrongdoing spread among thousands is wrongdoing by no one in particular.
Picture a man at a packed football match who joins in a vicious chant against a player. He would never say those words alone. In a crowd of forty thousand, it feels like nobody's voice. Then a camera picks out his face, and his name is printed the next morning.
ʿInda rabbika means that crowd never existed in the way he thought. Before Allah there are no faces in a mass, only persons, each known by name.
Someone may ask: is this a God who enjoys keeping score? Is the precision a kind of vanity? He gains nothing from it and needs nothing from anyone (35:15). The precision is justice. A punishment aimed at a crowd would strike the innocent. One aimed by name strikes only the one who earned it. That same precision is why the next ayah can say the believers were brought out first.
