At-Tur · Makki · ayah 32 of 49

At-Tur 52:32

أَمْ تَأْمُرُهُمْ أَحْلَـٰمُهُم بِهَـٰذَآ ۚ أَمْ هُمْ قَوْمٌ طَاغُونَ

“Or do their minds[1558] command them to [say] this, or are they a transgressing people?”

Saheeh International

Essence

The city's famous minds contradicted themselves in a single breath; the ayah asks whether reason really ordered this, or whether pride did.

A reflection

Brilliant for the world, blind for the soul

The word chosen for 'minds' is pointed. The leaders of Quraysh were known as ahl al-aḥlām, people of minds and judgement. One early commentator said that in pre-Islamic times they were counted the wise men of Arabia. Another said their great men were described by their minds and intellects. So when the ayah asks 'do their minds command them this?', it is speaking to their pride.

A later commentator recorded one explanation of their reputation. People came to Makkah from all over the world for pilgrimage and trade. Mixing with so many nations, they gained experience without the hardship of travel.

But the same early commentator who praised their minds added a sharp line. Their minds were for their worldly affairs, he said. Their intellects had no place in their religion, so their intelligence did not help them. Another commentator said Allah belittled their minds, because they could not tell truth from falsehood.

Picture a barrister who can find the flaw in any contract in minutes. Clients pay heavily for his judgement. At dinner, his teenage son asks about God. He laughs and says religion is for people who do not think. The son asks if he has read the Quran. He has not read a single page of it. He has never applied his famous mind to the question at all.

That is the irony this ayah exposes. Great intelligence can sit beside total neglect of the most important questions. It is not that such people lack minds. It is that their minds have been hired for one department only.

The ayah does not mock intelligence. It mocks its misuse. A mind that can price a caravan's goods to the coin but cannot ask who made the caravan and the camels is not being reasonable. It is being selective. The question for every clever reader is simple: has your mind been allowed into your faith?
