At-Tur 52:49
وَمِنَ ٱلَّيْلِ فَسَبِّحْهُ وَإِدْبَـٰرَ ٱلنُّجُومِ
“And in a part of the night exalt Him and after [the setting of] the stars.”
Saheeh International
Essence
The surah of mockery and plots ends in the quiet of the night and the last stars of dawn, with a believer glorifying his Lord.
A reflection
Better than the world and all in it
What is the glorification 'at the retreat of the stars'? Several Companions, as two commentators record, said it means the two units of prayer before the dawn prayer. A major early commentator preferred the obligatory dawn prayer itself. Both readings meet in the same hour: the last dark minutes before the day.
The Prophet ﷺ treasured those two units. Sahih al-Bukhari records his wife saying he was not more constant in any voluntary prayer than in the two units before dawn. Sahih Muslim records his words: the two units of the dawn are better than the world and all that is in it.
Allah needs none of this. The gift is for the one who stands.
Picture a junior doctor starting a run of early shifts. Before the morning handover she finds an empty side-room and faces the window. She prays two short units while the sky is still dark above the car park. It takes four minutes. She says it is the only part of the day that belongs entirely to her and her Lord. Whatever the ward brings, she has already been given something better than all of it.
