At-Tur 52:48

وَٱصْبِرْ لِحُكْمِ رَبِّكَ فَإِنَّكَ بِأَعْيُنِنَا ۖ وَسَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِ رَبِّكَ حِينَ تَقُومُ

“And be patient, [O Muḥammad], for the decision of your Lord, for indeed, you are in Our eyes [i.e., sight]. And exalt [Allāh] with praise of your Lord when you arise”

Saheeh International

Essence

Hold firm under your Lord's decree, for you are under His watchful eyes, and when you rise, rise with His praise instead of their insults.

A reflection

Nothing to report

A classical commentator gave a striking reason for the words 'you are in Our eyes'. When a person complains of his situation to someone, he said, the complaint carries a hidden assumption: that the listener does not know. So Allah says: be patient, and do not complain of your state. You are in Our eyes. We see you. There is nothing to report.

That is majesty at its most intimate. Allah's seeing is so complete that the believer has no need to explain himself, narrate his pain or prove his case. Every insult the Prophet ﷺ heard, every plot against him, every lonely night, was already seen.

The ego finds this hard. It wants to be understood, and it often feels that understanding requires telling. We draft long messages about how we were wronged. We post accounts of our struggles. We explain, and explain again, hoping someone will finally see.

Picture a woman who has been treated unfairly by her employer. Late at night she writes a long post describing everything: the meetings, the emails, the comments. She reads it over, polishes it, hovers over 'share'. Then she remembers this ayah. She deletes the draft, washes, and prays two units in the dark. In prostration she says nothing about the details. She simply knows they are seen.

This is not a ban on seeking justice or asking for help. Elsewhere the Quran honours those who speak up when wronged. It is a freedom from the compulsion to be witnessed by everyone.

The proud heart needs an audience. The humble heart has one already. 'You are in Our eyes' quietly removes the need for any other. Allah does not need us to tell Him our story. We are the ones who need to remember that He has been watching every page.
