At-Tur 52:5
وَٱلسَّقْفِ ٱلْمَرْفُوعِ
“And [by] the ceiling [i.e., heaven] raised high”
Saheeh International
Essence
The sky is a roof raised over you by Someone who never signs His name on it; every rooftop you are proud of stands beneath His.
A reflection
Raised, by Someone unnamed
A new tower opens in the city centre. Forty floors of glass. On the very top, lit up at night in letters three storeys high, is the developer's surname. Everyone who looks at the skyline is meant to read it.
Now look at the ayah. Wa-s-saqfi l-marfūʿ: and by the roof raised high. The commentaries agree the roof is the sky. And notice the grammar. Marfūʿ means raised. It does not say who raised it. The whole run of oaths is built this way: a Book masṭūr, written; parchment manshūr, spread; a House maʿmūr, lived in; a roof marfūʿ, raised; a sea masjūr, filled. Every one is something done to it. The Doer is never named, and never needs to be.
That silence is its own kind of majesty. The greatest roof over the world has no name written across it. Another ayah says Allah raised the heavens without pillars that you can see (13:2). He did not need to sign it.
Our pride works in the opposite direction. We put our names on what we build, small and large. The extension on the house. The company logo. The plaque on the bench. The post that says 'my new office'. None of this is evil in itself. But stand under the open sky for a minute and these signatures look very small. Every roof we have ever been proud of sits underneath His.
Does Allah then need us to admire His sky? No. He is the Rich, free of need (35:15). In a hadith qudsi recorded by Muslim, He says that if every person who ever lived had the most devout heart, it would add nothing to His dominion. The sky is not there for His glory's sake. It is there for our humility, and our shelter.
Tonight, step outside and look up for one full minute. Then think of one thing you have put your name on, and hold it more lightly.
