At-Tur 52:6

وَٱلْبَحْرِ ٱلْمَسْجُورِ

“And [by] the sea set on fire,[1552]”

Saheeh International

Essence

The sea you know is full to the brim, held back from the land by a command, and one day it will burn: one word carries all three.

A reflection

A needle dipped in the ocean

A young sailor on a container ship stands on the night deck. For nine days there has been nothing in any direction but black water. No coast, no lights, no other ship. Below him the sea is several kilometres deep. Above him, stars. For the first time in his life he feels exactly as big as he is.

The ayah swears by al-baḥr, the sea. The first hearers named it for its breadth and spread: water so wide you cannot see its far shore. Most commentators say it is this sea, the one everyone has seen.

The Prophet ﷺ used the sea to describe something even larger. In a hadith qudsi recorded by Muslim, Allah says: if the first of you and the last of you, humans and jinn, stood together in one place and asked of Me, and I gave every one of them what they asked, it would decrease what I have no more than a needle decreases the sea when it is dipped into it.

Picture the needle going in and coming out. The sea is not smaller. That is the scale of what Allah holds.

Now think about what we are proud of. The savings figure we check. The donation we mention casually at dinner. The house, the second car, the title. We feel large because of what we hold or what we give. Beside the sea, all of it is a drop on a needle's tip. Beside His treasury, the sea itself is that drop.

This does not crush the soul. It frees it. If all of it is His, there is no point in pride, and no reason for anxiety either. You cannot impoverish Him by asking. You cannot impress Him by what you give.

Next time you stand at the shore, or even run a tap, think of the needle. Then ask Allah for something you have been too embarrassed to ask for.
