An-Najm 53:11

مَا كَذَبَ ٱلْفُؤَادُ مَا رَأَىٰٓ

“The heart[1566] did not lie [about] what it saw.”

Saheeh International

Essence

His heart did not lie about what he saw: the eye and the burning heart agreed, and neither pulled back from the truth.

A reflection

A lie is a charge that pulls up

Kadhaba, to lie, had physical pictures for the first hearers. The lexicons record them. A warrior who charged at his opponent and then pulled up short was said to have lied: his charge kadhaba. A she-camel's milk lied when it was expected to keep flowing and dried up. A cloth painted to look embroidered was called a liar, because its appearance promised what it did not have.

So a lie, at root, is something that falls short of what it promised. A charge that does not arrive. A supply that fails. A surface that misleads.

Now hear the ayah: mā kadhaba l-fuʾādu mā raʾā. The heart did not lie about what it saw. It did not pull up. It did not run dry halfway. It did not give a painted version of what was there. What the Prophet ﷺ saw, his heart received fully and held.

That picture of lying is uncomfortably wide. Picture a friend who promises on Monday to help you move flat on Saturday at eight. You plan around him. At five to eight he texts: so sorry, something has come up. He has not said a single false sentence. But his promise pulled up mid-charge, and you are left alone with a sofa on the stairs.

Most of our lies look like that. Not invented facts, but commitments that stop short. The prayer we promised ourselves we would keep. The visit we said we would make. The project we said we would finish.

The heart in this ayah did not fall short of what it saw. Ask where your own charges pull up. Then pick one, and ride it all the way to the end this week.
