An-Najm 53:36

أَمْ لَمْ يُنَبَّأْ بِمَا فِى صُحُفِ مُوسَىٰ

“Or has he not been informed of what was in the scriptures of Moses”

Essence

The truth about who carries your account was not invented yesterday: it was written on the pages given to Musa, and no one who has heard it can plead ignorance.

A reflection

The same recipe, three generations apart

A young woman clears out her late grandmother's kitchen. In a tin at the back of a cupboard she finds a handwritten card in her great-grandmother's script: a recipe for the family's festival bread. She reads it twice. It is word for word the recipe her own mother taught her last year, down to the pinch of cardamom. Three generations, two countries, and the same instructions arrived intact.

This ayah makes a similar claim about the moral law it is about to state. 'Has he not been informed of what is in the scrolls of Musa?' What follows, that no bearer of burdens bears another's burden, that a person has only what he strove for, is not presented as a new idea. It is presented as old: already written on the pages given to Musa, and to Ibrahim before him.

The commentaries develop this. One records an early authority who said that the whole passage from 'no bearer of burdens' onward is in the scrolls of Ibrahim and Musa. Another argues that the foundations of religion, the oneness of God, the resurrection, accountability, are found in every revealed book. No scripture was left without them. That is why the Prophet ﷺ was told, 'So follow their guidance' (6:90). The details of law differ between messengers. The foundations do not.

This matters for how a believer reads the Quran. It is not a sudden innovation, cut off from what came before. It speaks as the latest copy of a recipe handed down from the first prophets, restored to its original measures.

It also matters for the man in this passage. He had bet his soul on a novel idea: that someone else could carry his punishment for a fee. The ayah answers that the oldest pages in the world already said otherwise. His bargain was not daring. It was simply uninformed.
