An-Najm 53:46
مِن نُّطْفَةٍ إِذَا تُمْنَىٰ
“From a sperm-drop when it is emitted”
Saheeh International
Essence
Every person began as a little water poured and measured out; the pouring was ours, the making was His.
A reflection
"Everything you are, you owe to me"
A father and his seventeen-year-old son are shouting in the kitchen. The boy wants to study something the father thinks is useless. It ends with the father's trump card. 'Everything you are, you owe to me.' The boy goes upstairs and closes the door very quietly, which is worse than slamming it.
The father is not entirely wrong. He has fed, housed and worried over this boy for seventeen years. That is a real debt, and the Quran honours it elsewhere. But 'everything you are' claims too much, and this ayah shows exactly where the claim breaks.
Min nuṭfatin idhā tumnā: from a drop, when it is emitted. Look at the grammar. The verb is passive: tumnā, it is poured out. And it hangs on the verb of the ayah before: He created the two kinds, male and female, from a drop. One early commentator spelled it out. He created that, he said, from a drop when the man and the woman emit it. The parents' part is the pouring. The creating is His.
No parent chose the shape of their child's eyes. None designed the heart that started beating at a few weeks. None decided whether their drop would become a son or a daughter, a quiet child or a loud one. One classical commentator remarked that no one has ever been able to claim this work, just as no one claims to have made the heavens.
That is humbling for every parent, and freeing too. Your child is not your product. You are not the author of their soul. You are the first trustee of someone Allah made. That makes the debt they owe you real, and it also makes your claim on them limited.
The father in the kitchen could try a different sentence. 'Allah made you, and He gave you to me to look after. Let me help you choose well.' The ego shrinks from 'owner' to 'trustee'. And the boy might come back downstairs.
