An-Najm 53:54
فَغَشَّىٰهَا مَا غَشَّىٰ
“And covered them by that which He covered.[1574]”
Saheeh International
Essence
What covered the overturned towns is left unnamed, too great to describe, in the same words this surah used for a scene of glory.
A reflection
Left unnamed on purpose
A veteran paramedic is asked by her teenage nephew what the worst call of her career was. She thinks for a moment, then shakes her head. 'You don't need to know,' she says, and changes the subject. The nephew, who expected a story, is more unsettled by her silence than any story could have made him.
Fa-ghashshāhā mā ghashshā: so there covered it what covered it. The ayah does not say what. The commentators explain that it was stones, as the Quran says elsewhere: 'We rained upon them stones of baked clay' (11:82). But here, the description is deliberately withheld. Several commentators say the vagueness is there to magnify it, to make it fearful and immense.
One classical commentator added a grammatical point. The word mā, 'what', is a word of generality. It covers everything that befell them, without listing. And the doubled verb ghashshā can carry intensity: it covered, and covered thoroughly.
There is a lesson for the ego in the silence itself. We are people who like to know, measure and explain. We want the number, the footage, the full account. We feel that what we can describe, we have in some sense mastered.
This ayah refuses us that. It says, in effect: there are acts of Allah too great for your words. You will not hold this in a sentence. Stand before it, and be quiet.
That is not a failure of description. It is a form of reverence. The greatest power is the one that does not need to explain itself to you. And the right response to it is not curiosity but humility.
Is it arrogance for Allah to withhold the details? Only if He owed us a report. He does not. He tells us enough to take warning, and no more. The paramedic's silence protected her nephew. The ayah's silence protects us from treating the wrath of Allah as entertainment.
