An-Najm 53:57

أَزِفَتِ ٱلْـَٔازِفَةُ

“The Approaching Day has approached.”

Saheeh International

Essence

The Near One has drawn near: like a departure with the bags already packed, the Hour is as good as here.

A reflection

The cases already in the hall

The night before a family leaves the country for good, their suitcases stand packed in the hallway. The pictures are off the walls. The fridge is empty. They will sleep in the house one more night, but nobody feels at home in it any more. They have not left. And yet, in every way that matters, they have.

The first hearers had a line of poetry for exactly that feeling, and one early commentator quoted it on this ayah. A pre-Islamic poet wrote: the departure has drawn near. Our camels have not yet moved off with our saddles, and it is as if they had. The verb he used for 'drawn near' is azifa, the same verb as this ayah.

Azifati al-āzifa: the Near One has drawn near. The commentators explain it as the Hour, the Day of Resurrection, which has come close. One early authority called it one of the names of that Day, a name by which Allah magnified it and warned His servants.

The lexicons add that the root joins nearness with narrowing time. A cramped place was called by it. So were short, hurried steps.

Put the poem and the ayah together, and the meaning sharpens. The Hour is not merely somewhere ahead on a distant calendar. It is like a departure whose bags are already at the door. The camels are loaded. They have not moved yet. But the leaving has, in a sense, already begun.

That changes how the present feels. The family in the hallway does not start a long project in that house. They do not buy new curtains. They live the last night as a last night.

The ayah invites a similar shift. Not panic, and not paralysis. Simply the awareness that the bags are packed. That this world is the house we are about to leave. And that wise people do not invest everything in curtains for a house they are already leaving.
