An-Najm 53:58

لَيْسَ لَهَا مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ كَاشِفَةٌ

“Of it, [from those] besides Allāh, there is no remover.”

Saheeh International

Essence

No one but Allah can uncover when the Hour will come or lift it away, and the same is true of every weight on you.

A reflection

The one thing nobody will uncover

On a conference stage, a technology founder in white trainers tells three thousand people that within a generation his systems will predict almost everything. Elections, diseases, markets, even the weather a year ahead. The audience applauds. It is a thrilling sentence, and it flatters everyone in the room.

Laysa lahā min dūni Allāhi kāshifa: there is none, besides Allah, to uncover it. The commentators give the word kāshifa several meanings, and together they leave no gap. No one can reveal when the Hour will come; it is among the most hidden of hidden things. No one can repel it or lift its terrors once it arrives. No one can bring it forward or hold it back. Only Allah.

One commentator records that Allah has not told its time to any angel brought near or any prophet sent. Another connects the ayah to the Quran's own words: 'None will reveal it at its time except Him' (7:187).

One classical commentator noticed a small word that strengthens the denial. The Arabic says min dūni Allāh, and the preposition min in a negative sentence, he explained, makes the negation total. Not 'no great power can uncover it'. Not a single one.

That is a quiet rebuke to a certain kind of confidence. Human knowledge is real and wonderful. We can map the ocean floor and read the code of a cell. But there is a ceiling, and this ayah names one thing that sits above it. Whatever our systems predict, they will not predict this.

Is it vain for Allah to keep this to Himself? It would be, if the knowledge were withheld out of jealousy. It is withheld for our sake. A known date would turn the whole of life into procrastination until the final week. The unknown date keeps every day serious.

The founder in the trainers may build remarkable things. But on this one question, he and the shepherd in the hills know exactly the same: nothing. The ego shrinks to its proper size, and the One who knows remains.
