An-Najm 53:56

هَـٰذَا نَذِيرٌ مِّنَ ٱلنُّذُرِ ٱلْأُولَىٰٓ

“This [Prophet (ﷺ)] is a warner from [i.e., like] the former warners.”

Saheeh International

Essence

This warning is not new: it stands in the line of every earlier warner, whose warnings the surah has just shown coming true.

A reflection

Not a new religion

On a slow train, an elderly man sitting opposite a young woman in a headscarf asks, kindly enough, 'When did your religion start, then? The seventh century?' She thinks for a moment. 'That depends,' she says, 'on whether you mean the last messenger, or the first.'

Her answer is close to what this ayah says. Hādhā nadhīrun mina al-nudhuri al-ūlā: this is a warner from among the earlier warners. The commentators explain: Muhammad ﷺ is of their kind, sent as they were sent. One commentary puts it simply: he is not something novel among the messengers. Another classical commentator connects it to the Quran's own words elsewhere: 'Say: I am not something new among the messengers' (46:9).

That is a striking claim to make in Makkah. The Prophet's opponents treated his message as an outrageous novelty, a break with everything their fathers knew. The Quran answers that the opposite is true. Their idols were the innovation. The message of one God, of accountability, of return to Him, was the old one. Nuh brought it. Hud brought it. Salih, Ibrahim and Musa brought it. The surah has just named their peoples.

A modern sceptic might still say: but the religion called Islam has a date. That is fair as a matter of history. The final form of the message, the Quran and the life of the Prophet ﷺ, arrived at a particular time and place. What remains open is how one describes that: as a new religion, or as the last link in a long chain.

The ayah's answer is the second. It places the Prophet ﷺ not at the start of a story but near its end. He is one of the warners, the latest of a line.

So when someone asks when your faith began, you can answer as the young woman did. Its final messenger came in the seventh century. Its first warner came long before. And its message has not changed.
