Essence
The same words that opened ʿĀd's story now close it; heard before the wind they said listen, heard after it they leave you speechless.
A reflection
Bookends
A best man opens his wedding speech with one sentence about his friend. For ten minutes he tells stories: the late nights, the hard year, the way the groom looked after his mother. Then he closes with exactly the same opening sentence. The guests have heard it twice, but the second time the room goes quiet.
This refrain has its full treatment at 54:16. Here it does something new: it closes a story it also opened. At 54:18 it came straight after "ʿĀd denied", before any detail. Now, after the screaming wind and the uprooted palms, it returns word for word.
One commentator explains that this is no repetition. The first time, the question turned the listeners' hearts to attention before the account. This time it is an exclamation of awe and wonder, after the account has been given. He mentions another view, that the first refrain is about this world and the second about the next. He finds it unlikely, because this one follows directly on the worldly punishment.
So ʿĀd's story is held between two identical sentences, like a picture between two hands. Before: listen. After: be still.
