Ash-Shams 91:12

إِذِ ٱنۢبَعَثَ أَشْقَىٰهَا

“When the most wretched of them was sent forth.[1933]”

Saheeh International

Essence

One man sprang up for the deed: powerful, protected and eager, sent by a people who wanted it done.

A reflection

Like Abū Zamʿa

Sahih al-Bukhari preserves a sermon in which the Prophet ﷺ spoke about the she-camel and the man who hamstrung her. He recited this ayah. Then he described the man. 'A man rose for it who was mighty, fierce and protected among his clan, like Abū Zamʿa.'

That last phrase matters. Abū Zamʿa was not an ancient figure. He was a man of the Prophet's own time, the uncle of al-Zubayr ibn al-ʿAwwām, a man the listeners could picture. The Prophet ﷺ did not leave Thamūd's story safely in the past. He pointed to its living equivalent in the congregation's own city.

Notice the description, too. Not a lone madman, but a man of standing: ʿazīz, mighty; ʿārim, fierce and unruly; manīʿ fī rahṭih, shielded by his people. The commentaries name him Qudār ibn Sālif. His strength was not only in his arm. It was in the fact that nobody could touch him.

Picture a university department with one star professor. His grants pay for half the posts. His students learn in their first term not to complain about the way he speaks to them. When one does, the complaint goes quietly into a drawer. He is manīʿ fī rahṭih: protected by what the institution cannot afford to lose.

Every organisation, family and community has to decide what it does with such a person. The ayah and the hadith together give the warning. The strongman is often the one who acts. But he acts because a whole system made him untouchable.

For anyone who leads, the question is sharp. Who is protected in my 'clan' because I need them? And what are they free to do because of it?
