Al-Qamar 54:4

وَلَقَدْ جَآءَهُم مِّنَ ٱلْأَنۢبَآءِ مَا فِيهِ مُزْدَجَرٌ

“And there has already come to them of information that in which there is deterrence.”

Essence

Enough warning had already arrived, the ayah says, and a warning is the shout of someone who wants you to live.

A reflection

One shout that drives and checks

On a crowded beach a lifeguard stands up and blows one long blast on her whistle. A teenager drifting towards the rip current turns. A child heading for the rocks stops. A swimmer who had not noticed the flag changing heads back in. One sound has done two things at once. It has stopped some people and moved others.

That is the picture inside muzdajar. Zajr was a herder's sharp cry. He shouted at a camel to send it on its way. A shepherd cried out at a dog or a wild animal to stop it in its tracks. The same shout drives forward and holds back. From there it came to mean a rebuke, and whatever deters from wrong. The lexicons record this, and it is established.

The commentaries gloss the word as a deterrent, a forbidding said firmly. One adds a second sense: a place of deterrence, a point where one is made to stop. An early reading explains it simply as an end point, a place where one stops going further.

Notice what the herder's cry is not. It is not anger for its own sake. The herder shouts because he does not want to lose the camel. The shepherd shouts because he does not want the wolf to take the lamb. A deterrent belongs to someone who has something to protect.

So the ayah says news has come to them containing a muzdajar. That is a cry from someone who cares where they are heading. The stories of earlier peoples, which the surah is about to tell, are not horror stories for entertainment. They are a shout across the sand.

What is the herder's cry in your own life? Perhaps a verse that unsettles you, a friend's sharp word, a near miss on the road. Do not resent it. Ask what it is turning you away from, and what it is sending you towards.
