Al-Qamar 54:3
وَكَذَّبُوا۟ وَٱتَّبَعُوٓا۟ أَهْوَآءَهُمْ ۚ وَكُلُّ أَمْرٍ مُّسْتَقِرٌّ
“And they denied and followed their inclinations. But for every matter is a [time of] settlement.”
Saheeh International
Essence
They called the sign passing; the ayah answers that every matter settles, and truth is what remains when the boiling stops.
A reflection
Passing, they said; settled, He answered
Sometimes a reply lands hardest when it borrows the shape of the insult. A child mutters that her new teacher "won't last the term". At the end of the year, the teacher signs her report with a small note: still here.
In the previous ayah the deniers gave their verdict on the split moon. Siḥrun mustamirr: a magic that is passing, that will drift away like cloud. Now, one ayah later, comes the reply: wa-kullu amrin mustaqirr. Every matter is settled.
Listen to the two words side by side. Mustamirr and mustaqirr. Same verb pattern, same rhythm, same ending. Only one letter at the heart changes. One classical theologian reads the second word as a direct answer to the first. No, his affair is not passing. Every part of it is settled.
So the ayah takes their own word and turns it over. They hoped it would drift past. It will not drift. It will come to rest exactly where it belongs.
One commentator explains the phrase broadly. Every matter must reach an end where it settles. The Prophet's affair, too, will reach a point where everyone sees whether it was truth or falsehood, and its outcome will be clear to all. Another describes the line as a closing remark that runs like a proverb.
And it has become one. Fourteen centuries later, the passing magic is still recited every day by millions. The people who called it passing are remembered only because the Quran quoted them.
There is something here for anyone who has been dismissed with a casual word. "It's a phase." "You won't stick at it." "This will blow over." The ayah does not argue with the label. It simply states what time will show. Matters settle. Truth stays where it has settled. Wait, and keep going.
