Al-Waqi'ah 56:5
وَبُسَّتِ ٱلْجِبَالُ بَسًّا
“And the mountains are broken down, crumbling”
Saheeh International
Essence
The mountains are crumbled with a crumbling, and the Arabic word for it is a traveller's food, made by rubbing grain down and wetting it.
A reflection
The hardest thing we know, and what three days does to it
A lime kiln is a hole in a hillside with a fire in it. You load limestone and fuel in layers and burn it for three days. What comes out is not stone. It is quicklime, a pale lump that crumbles in the hand. Add water and it boils and spits, then goes to a smooth white putty you can spread with a trowel.
The same rock a mason cannot cut without steel becomes something you can smear. Nothing in the material changed its identity. Heat was applied, patiently, for long enough.
This ayah does that to every mountain at once, and the verb is passive again. They are crumbled. Somebody crumbles them.
The commentaries supply the readings and they are not shy. Crumbled to pieces, says one line of early authorities. Torn up from their roots and gone, says another. Spread out flat like sand and dust. Driven along over the face of the earth. Made into a poured heap after being lofty and tall.
Now notice why this is a majesty ayah rather than a disaster report.
A mountain is the word every language reaches for when it wants to say permanent. We say rock solid. We say immovable. We build our vocabulary of stability out of geology because nothing in human experience lasts as long. And then the ayah uses, of mountains, a verb the Arabs used for rubbing grain down with the fingers.
An ego cannot hold its shape against that. Pride is always pride in a durability: my name will last, my work will stand, my family will remember. Not one of those claims is as strong as a mountain's claim, and the mountain's claim closes in a single line of a surah.
Someone will ask whether God needs to demonstrate this. He is in no need of anything (35:15), and a demonstration would be for an audience. This is not a demonstration. It is simply what is true about mountains, said out loud by the One who put them there.
And the kiln is the smaller mercy in the picture. Rock is reduced for a purpose. The powder goes onto a wall, and the wall keeps a family dry.
