Al-Hadid · Madani · ayah 17 of 29
Al-Hadid 57:17
“Know that Allāh gives life to the earth after its lifelessness. We have made clear to you the signs; perhaps you will understand.[1632]”

Essence
The One who greens dead ground can revive a hardened heart, a lost person and the dead themselves.
A reflection
Nobody irrigated the desert valley
A woman walks a desert valley in a dry year. Everything is brown stone and grey scrub. Nothing moves except lizards. Three years later, after a rare wet winter, she walks the same valley again. The floor is covered in flowers, yellow and violet, as far as she can see. People have driven hundreds of miles to photograph it.
Nobody planted them. No ministry irrigated the valley. No company engineered the bloom. The seeds lay waiting in dust that looked dead, and rain came from a sky no one controls.
That is the claim at the centre of this ayah. Anna Allāha yuḥyī al-arḍa baʿda mawtihā: Allah gives life to the earth after its death. Not a garden. The earth. Whole valleys, plains and hillsides at once, while we sleep.
The ego is very good at claiming credit. A man is proud of his allotment, a woman of her career, a nation of its harvest. We plough, water and fertilise, and all of it is real effort. But the ego quietly forgets the part it cannot do. It cannot make a single cell decide to live. Every gardener on earth is, in the end, waiting.
The ayah opens with iʿlamū, know. The root pictures a landmark on a road, a sign that points beyond itself. The greening valley is such a waymark. It points away from our pride to the One who actually brings things to life.
Does He need us to notice? No. The valley blooms whether or not anyone drives out to see it. The command to know is for us. A person who knows who gives life stops carrying the arrogant weight of thinking they make the world grow. They can work hard and still rest, because the outcome was never in their hands.
Next time you see green where there was none, stop. Do not admire it as scenery. Read it as a signature, and let your own pride grow quieter.
