Al-Hashr · Madani · ayah 1 of 24

Al-Hashr 59:1

سَبَّحَ لِلَّهِ مَا فِى ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَمَا فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ ۖ وَهُوَ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلْحَكِيمُ

“Whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth exalts Allāh,[1650] and He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.”

Essence

Before a single verse of this surah's hard history unfolds, everything in the heavens and earth has already declared Him far above every flaw.

A reflection

Praised before anyone obeyed

Notice the tense. The ayah does not say everything will glorify Him once it understands why. It does not say everything glorifies Him now, as an ongoing performance for an audience. It says sabbaḥa: a completed action, already finished, a settled fact before this surah tells you a single thing that happened. Whatever is coming next, broken treaties, burned orchards, a people driven from their homes, arrives after a declaration that was already true.

Think of a market trader who repeats his own slogan before every sale. He watches the crowd's faces for the nod that lets him believe it himself. His claim is only as solid as the next passer-by's reaction. Measure that against a fact that stood complete before any audience gathered. The sun did not wait for a witness before it rose. The sky did not glorify Him because someone was watching it do so.

The ayah closes with two names held together, al-ʿAzīz, the Mighty, and al-Ḥakīm, the Wise. Neither is offered as an argument to be weighed. They are stated the way you would state the depth of an ocean: not for Him to be believed, but because it is so. A story about armies, sieges and expulsion is about to be told. The ayah makes sure you read it already knowing whose wisdom and whose might were never in question.

This is where arrogance shows itself for what it actually is. It is a demand to be believed before you have earned it, a vanity that cannot survive without a witness. Set it beside a greatness that was true in the empty sky before anyone looked up, and the demand looks very small indeed.
