Al-Hashr 59:2

“It is He who expelled the ones who disbelieved among the People of the Scripture[1651] from their homes at the first gathering.[1652] You did not think they would leave, and they thought that their fortresses would protect them from Allāh; but [the decree of] Allāh came upon them from where they had not expected, and He cast terror into their hearts [so] they destroyed their houses by their [own] hands and the hands of the believers. So take warning, O people of vision.”

Essence

A people who trusted their fortresses watched His decree arrive from a direction they had never thought to guard.

A reflection

From a direction they never thought to guard

Banū al-Naḍīr held some of the strongest fortresses near Madinah. The Muslims had never seriously expected to dislodge them. The ayah says it plainly: you yourselves did not think they would leave. And the Naḍīr thought the same thing from the other side, certain their walls stood between them and anything that could reach them, even God.

A homeowner installs every lock and camera the market sells, then is burgled through a door he never thought to check. The failure was never in the locks he bought. It was in the quiet confidence that his own planning had closed every gap. That confidence is its own small arrogance, the sense that enough preparation makes a person answerable to nothing beyond their own foresight.

The ayah does not say God overpowered their fortresses. It says He came from where they had not reckoned, a route outside the whole map they had drawn of what could threaten them. Their walls were real. Their calculation of safety was not. Between the two sat an assumption no stone could hold up: that their own planning was the full account of what could happen to them.

This is not a story about fortresses being weak. Strong walls still stand. It is a story about where a person's confidence finally rests, after every wall is built as high as it will go.

The same gap shows up on a smaller scale in anyone who has ever felt briefly untouchable. The driver who has never had an accident. The investor who has never seen a downturn. The manager whose team has never once let her down. None of them are wrong about their record. What they are wrong about is treating an unbroken record as proof against every future case. It is one mercy among many, and it could run its course at any point.
