Al-Hashr 59:3

“And if not that Allāh had decreed for them evacuation, He would have punished them in [this] world, and for them in the Hereafter is the punishment of the Fire.”

Essence

What looked like the harshest possible loss, driven from every home they owned, was in fact the lighter sentence; worse had already been held back.

A reflection

A decree that withheld something worse

Lawlā, had it not been, is a word that opens a door onto an alternative. Had God not written exile for them, He would have punished them in this life. The sentence tells you plainly that a harder fate stood ready and was not used. The lexicons picture kitāba, writing, as a water-skin stitched so tightly that not a drop escapes. What God writes holds, and here it held back something worse than what actually happened.

There is a quiet arrogance in judging a decree only by how it feels from inside it. Driven from their homes, stripped of land their families had worked for generations, the Naḍīr would surely have called this the worst thing imaginable. The ayah corrects that from outside their view: killing and captivity, the fate of others who had resisted the same way, were the real alternative. What they suffered was the exit God had written to spare them the heavier door.

This is a hard thing to accept in the middle of any loss, not only theirs. A person rarely has the vantage point to compare their actual hardship against the one they were spared. The ayah supplies that vantage point here, for a case history can at least be checked. Before the heavier alternative is spared, no one inside the trial can be certain which gate they are walking through.
