Al-Hashr · Madani · ayah 4 of 24
Al-Hashr 59:4
“That is because they opposed Allāh and His Messenger. And whoever opposes Allāh - then indeed, Allāh is severe in penalty.”
Saheeh International
Essence
What split them from God and His Messenger was not a disagreement but a side chosen, cut away from the only side worth standing on.
A reflection
A side no one can actually oppose
A junior clerk challenges the managing director to a contest of wills over a parking space. He is certain that sharing a building makes them equals. Everyone else in the office can already see how that contest ends, long before it starts.
There is a particular arrogance in standing against someone whose scale you have badly misjudged. Shiqāq against God carries exactly that misjudgement, multiplied past any office politics. It assumes a contest between two sides of comparable standing, when one side holds every court, every consequence and every outcome already in His hand. The ayah does not argue the point at length. It simply states where that contest ends: severe retribution, for whoever takes it up.
This is not a threat aimed at ordinary disagreement. It is aimed at a particular posture: setting oneself against God and His Messenger as though they were just another party, one to be outlasted. The Naḍīr had broken a sworn treaty and plotted against a life. That is the scale of opposition this ayah is describing, not a quiet doubt or a private struggle with faith.
What the ayah asks of its reader is smaller and more useful than fear: a clear-eyed sense of scale. Before taking up any contest, against God or against anyone else, it is worth knowing honestly what you are actually standing against.
