Al-Mumtahanah 60:2

“If they gain dominance over you, they would be [i.e., behave] to you as enemies and extend against you their hands and their tongues with evil, and they wish you would disbelieve.”

Essence

Their hostility was never hidden; it was only waiting for the grip of power to show itself in full.

A reflection

What a grip reveals

The verb here, yathqafūkum, pictures a firm grip, the kind a craftsman uses to press a crooked shaft straight until it cannot spring back. Should they gain that grip on you, the ayah says, this is what they would be.

The word is doing careful work. It is not describing what these people say while the believers hold the advantage. It is describing what they would do the moment the advantage changed hands. The ayah is not interested in the version of a person that circumstances currently allow to be polite. It is interested in the version that circumstances would release.

This is one of the oldest and least comfortable tests of character, and it rarely announces itself. A junior colleague who is warm and deferential while you outrank him can become unrecognisable the moment he is promoted above you, and the warmth turns out to have been borrowed from the circumstance rather than owned by the man. Most people never find out which version of a friend, a business partner, or a neighbour they actually have, because the grip of real power never changes hands between them.

The ayah offers a quieter kind of wisdom than suspicion of everyone: it says that a person's conduct under constraint tells you less about them than their conduct given a free hand would. It does not ask the reader to assume the worst of people by default. It asks them not to mistake good behaviour under restraint for a settled character, when restraint is the only thing holding it in place.
