At-Tahrim 66:5

“Perhaps his Lord, if he divorced you [all], would substitute for him wives better than you - submitting [to Allāh], believing, devoutly obedient, repentant, worshipping, and traveling[1708] - [ones] previously married and virgins.”

Essence

A warning framed as a hypothetical replacement was never a plan to carry out — and the fact it never did is itself proof of what these women already were.

A reflection

Measured by what could be, not threatened with it

A fair question meets this ayah immediately: how can Allah describe hypothetical replacement wives as better than you, when the very women being addressed would go on to be remembered, by name, as Mothers of the Believers — a rank no one after them could ever hold?

Classical commentators asked exactly this, and answered it the same way. The verse is not a prediction of what would happen. It is, in their phrase, an informing of what Allah is able to do — a warning shaped as a hypothetical, built to shake two people who had let a grievance grow, not a plan ever intended to be carried out. The same pattern appears elsewhere in the Quran, addressed to an entire community rather than two individuals: if you turn away, He will replace you with a people other than you (47:38). No such replacement followed there either. The warning did its work precisely by never needing to become real.

And there is a sharper point folded into the very logic of the warning. If better women than his wives had genuinely existed and mattered to the outcome, nothing would have stopped the separation threatened here from actually happening. It never did. He kept every one of them. The warning that could have ended in their replacement ended instead in their permanence — which is, read honestly, a stronger testimony to who they were than if the warning had never been spoken at all.
