Al-Mulk 67:11
فَٱعْتَرَفُوا۟ بِذَنۢبِهِمْ فَسُحْقًا لِّأَصْحَـٰبِ ٱلسَّعِيرِ
“And they will admit their sin, so [it is] alienation[1715] for the companions of the Blaze.”

Essence
A full, honest, voluntary confession is recorded here, and it changes nothing, because the only thing it is missing is the date.
A reflection
A true confession that does not help
We are raised to believe that owning up is the turn in the story. Admit it, and something is released. The confession is the healing.
This ayah records a confession that is complete, voluntary, unforced and accurate. They state what reached them, what they did with it, and what they said about the man who brought it. And then: so away with the companions of the Blaze.
The commentators put it in one sentence, and it is worth reading slowly. Away with them, they say, whether they confess or deny, since that does not benefit them.
Nothing is wrong with the confession. It is not rejected as insincere, and it is not called a lie. It is simply late.
A maltster who lets a germinating floor run hot will know within a morning. There is a window, measured in hours, when turning the piece and dropping the depth will save it. Past that window the grain has done what heat does, and nothing can be undone by effort or by candour. He can ring the brewery and tell the whole truth, and should. The malt is still only fit for the heap, and both men know it before the call ends.
So this ayah is not teaching that honesty is worthless. It is teaching that honesty is not a lever you can pull at any time.
And that is the uncomfortable part, because nearly everyone is quietly relying on exactly that lever. There is a thing you intend to put right eventually. You already know what you would say. You have the sentence drafted, and the drafting itself provides a strange comfort. It is as though having the words ready were the same as having said them.
The people in this ayah had the sentence perfectly. They said it beautifully. What they did not have was a Tuesday afternoon.
