The very part of him he was proudest to show in public will carry a mark he can never again hide.

A reflection

A word the ayah refuses to use

Arabic has an ordinary word for a human face, and an ordinary word for a human nose. This ayah uses neither. Khurṭūm properly names an elephant's trunk, or the snout of a beast of prey, and the choice to apply it here, to this man specifically, is not an accident of vocabulary. One classical lexicon explains the reasoning plainly: the brand lands precisely where it does because the nose is judged the ugliest possible place to disfigure, and the word itself withholds even the dignity of calling it a face at all.

This lands with real force once the preceding ayat are held in view. A man who hauled people around by force, who related to others through appetite and domination rather than reason, has already been described, functionally, as something closer to a beast than a person in how he actually treated the people around him. This ayah simply makes that description visible, applying to his very features the vocabulary his own conduct had already earned in substance.

There is a severe but coherent logic here, not cruelty for its own sake: a man who used his face, his bearing, his visible standing, to intimidate and dominate rather than to represent any genuine human dignity is shown, in this warning, having that very face renamed in the vocabulary of the animal he had already chosen to resemble in every way that mattered.

The ayah does not invent an insult from nowhere. It simply states, in the sharpest possible language, what the preceding description had already made true.
