Al-Qalam 68:17
“Indeed, We have tried them as We tried the companions of the garden, when they swore to cut its fruit in the [early] morning”
Saheeh International
Essence
The same test is coming for these proud, wealthy men that once came for a group of garden owners who swore they would harvest everything by morning.
A reflection
A test is wearing something through, not creating a flaw
The root behind balawnā, We have tried, pictures a garment worn thin through ordinary use, or a she-camel worn lean by long travel. To test someone, in this root's oldest sense, is to wear them the way daily life wears a shirt: not inventing a weakness from nothing, but exposing, through repeated use, whatever the material was actually made of all along. People wished each other well on a new garment with a small proverb: wear it out, and may Allah replace it. Trial, in this picture, is simply what living does to anything, over enough time.
That reframes what is about to happen in this story. Allah is not described as creating a flaw in these men that was not there before. He is described as applying the ordinary wear of circumstance, a sudden loss, to reveal character that had already formed, quietly, over years of comfortable prosperity. The test does not plant the greed. It shows it.
This matters for how the connection to the wealthy, arrogant man of 68:14 should be read. He, too, is now promised a trial, 'We have tried them as We tried the companions of the Garden,' and the implication is not that Allah is manufacturing a crisis to catch him out unfairly. It is that whatever has quietly formed in him across years of unchallenged comfort is about to be worn through to what it actually is, the way any garment eventually shows its true weave once used long and hard enough.
A reader can take this personally without needing a crisis of their own on the horizon: whatever character has been quietly forming during an easy season will, sooner or later, simply be shown for what it already was.
