Al-Qalam 68:26

فَلَمَّا رَأَوْهَا قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّا لَضَآلُّونَ

“But when they saw it, they said, "Indeed, we are lost;”

Saheeh International

Essence

Faced with the ruin they had caused, their first instinct was the gentlest possible lie: we must simply have lost our way.

A reflection

The kindest explanation offered first

Ḍāllūn, lost, comes from a root for a traveller who finds no road to his destination, bewildered rather than at fault, led astray by circumstance rather than by his own hand. It is, among the explanations available to these men in this moment, the gentlest one imaginable: not we have done something terrible, but simply we have taken a wrong turning, and this is not, after all, our garden at all.

This is worth noticing as the predictable first move of a mind confronted with a reality too large to absorb all at once. Before blame, before responsibility, before grief, the mind often reaches for the explanation that costs it the least: a mistake of navigation rather than a verdict on character. It is not necessarily dishonesty in the calculated sense. It is closer to a reflex, the gentlest story available, reached for automatically before a harder, truer one can be faced.

A woman receiving genuinely devastating medical news in a quiet hospital corridor finds her very first thought is that the results must somehow belong to someone else entirely, a mix-up at the lab, a simple filing error, anything at all other than the plain, stated fact the doctor has just calmly delivered to her directly. The thought is not really a deliberate decision to lie to herself. It is the mind's first, entirely instinctive attempt to buy itself a few more precious seconds before an unbearable truth has to be fully let in and faced.

This ayah catches these men at exactly that threshold, the single breath between seeing devastation and beginning, honestly, to name what it actually means. The very next ayah, already told elsewhere, shows how quickly that gentler explanation gave way to something closer to the truth.
