Al-Qalam 68:7

إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَن ضَلَّ عَن سَبِيلِهِۦ وَهُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِٱلْمُهْتَدِينَ

“Indeed, your Lord is most knowing of who has gone astray from His way, and He is most knowing of the [rightly] guided.”

Saheeh International

Essence

The verdict on who is lost and who is guided was never yours to deliver; your Lord already knows both, completely.

A reflection

Lost like milk in water, not just off a path

The common picture of ḍalāl is a traveller who has wandered off a visible road: a dramatic, nameable wrong turn. The lexicons preserve a second, quieter image worth holding alongside it: ḍalla al-labanu fī al-māʾ, the milk was lost in the water. Not a wrong turn at all. Something that simply dissolved, disappeared into something else, until it could no longer be found or separated out.

Both pictures are true to how people actually stray, and the second is the one most readers overlook. Some straying looks like a single dramatic rebellion, a clear decision to leave the road. Far more of it looks like milk lost in water: a slow dilution, one compromise mixed into the next, until years later someone realises their convictions were never rejected outright, only gradually swallowed up by something else, with no single moment they could point to and call the wrong turn.

A man in his forties, asked by his teenage daughter why he stopped praying, cannot actually name a day it happened. There was no crisis, no argument with God, no dramatic loss of faith. There was simply a demanding decade, a slow slide of priorities, a hundred small nights when prayer lost quietly to something smaller than itself, until the habit had dissolved the way milk dissolves in water, present everywhere and findable nowhere.

This ayah's comfort to the Prophet ﷺ, that Allah knows who has strayed, carries an edge worth sitting with privately too. Some of the straying He knows completely is the kind nobody, including the person doing it, ever consciously chose.
