Al-Qalam 68:45

وَأُمْلِى لَهُمْ ۚ إِنَّ كَيْدِى مَتِينٌ

“And I will give them time. Indeed, My plan is firm.”

Saheeh International

Essence

The delay is not forgetfulness; it is the length of rope being measured out before it draws taut.

A reflection

Widening the fetter, not removing it

Umlī lahum, I give them respite, comes from a root whose one concrete physical use the lexicons preserve directly: amlaytu al-qayd li-l-baʿīr, to widen the hobble on a camel, letting the animal roam further before the tether pulls tight again. The same stock gives al-malwān, night and day, named for how each one stretches out and repeats.

The image is precise and deliberately unsettling. A loosened tether is not a removed one. The camel feels freer, wanders further, perhaps forgets the rope is there at all — and the rope is still there, exactly as attached as it always was, simply given more length to run out before it matters again.

A dog trainer sometimes lets a stubborn puppy wander the full length of a long lead, letting it feel like freedom right up until it reaches the end and discovers exactly where the limit was all along. Nothing about the lead changed in that time. Only the puppy's awareness of it did.

This is restraint refusing to be mistaken for absence. Allah's respite to those who deny Him is not Him looking away, forgetting, or losing interest in the outcome. It is the same hand holding the same tether, simply letting more of it play out before drawing it in. There is a reason this image unsettles rather than comforts on first reading. Most people, watching wrongdoing go unanswered for a stretch of time, want the delay to mean something has gone unnoticed, because an unnoticed wrong at least leaves room to hope it was never truly serious. The widened hobble removes that hope deliberately. The One holding the rope noticed everything. The length was chosen, not overlooked. A tether this deliberately lengthened is, in its own way, a kind of attention rather than neglect: something is being watched closely enough to know exactly how much length is safe to allow.
