Al-Qalam 68:46

أَمْ تَسْـَٔلُهُمْ أَجْرًا فَهُم مِّن مَّغْرَمٍ مُّثْقَلُونَ

“Or do you ask of them a payment, so they are by debt burdened down?”

Saheeh International

Essence

Nobody is being asked to pay for this message — which quietly removes the one excuse they could have honestly given for refusing it.

A reflection

A wage that heals, not one that extracts

Ajr, payment, reward, comes from a root the lexicons trace to two meeting senses: a worker's wage for labour, and a broken bone knitting back together, ujirat yaduhu, his hand was set. A wage, on this reading, is not simply extraction in exchange for effort. It is what restores a person after the strain of the work, the way a broken limb is restored by being properly set.

This is precisely the kind of ajr the Prophet ﷺ never asked of his own people, and this ayah states the fact as a rhetorical question with an obvious answer: no, he did not ask them for payment. His own ajr lay elsewhere entirely — with Allah, who restores what delivering this message actually cost him, not with an audience being asked to fund it.

A physiotherapist's fee is not a penalty imposed on an already injured patient. It is what lets the clinic keep setting bones for the next person who walks through the door, an exchange that restores on both sides rather than simply draining one side for the other's benefit. The Prophet's ﷺ message carried none of even this ordinary, legitimate exchange. He gave it freely, and the restoration he sought came from a source his listeners were never asked to supply. Elsewhere the Qur'an has the Prophet say this directly, in his own words, more than once: “whatever payment I have asked of you, it is yours to keep; my reward is only upon Allah” (34:47), and “I ask of you no payment for it, nor am I one of the pretenders” (38:86). The repetition across more than one surah is itself telling. This was not a single defensive claim made once under pressure. It was a settled, standing fact about how the message was delivered, restated wherever the same accusation might otherwise have taken root.
