Al-Qalam 68:8
فَلَا تُطِعِ ٱلْمُكَذِّبِينَ
“Then do not obey the deniers.”
Saheeh International
Essence
Do not obey the ones who call the truth a lie, whatever they are offering in exchange for your silence.
A reflection
A charge that stops short of its target
The root behind mukadhdhibīn, deniers, pictures a charge that falls short. A warrior who rode at his enemy and pulled up before impact was said to have kadhaba, lied, with his own body. A she-camel whose milk dried up early, after promising a full yield, had also kadhabat. A lie, in this root's oldest sense, is not only false speech. It is any claim, word, deed or appearance, that promises one thing and delivers less.
Seen this way, the deniers this ayah names were not simply people who disagreed with a proposition. They were people whose whole stance towards the truth fell short of what reality actually demanded of them: eyes that saw the signs and refused to follow where they led, a charge pulled up just before it would have cost them something.
This matters for how the command lands. 'Do not obey the deniers' is not a call to argue harder against people holding a different opinion honestly reached. It is a refusal to let a charge that stopped short of the truth set the terms for someone who had ridden all the way to it. The Prophet ﷺ had arrived at full conviction, at real cost. He was now being asked, by people whose own position was a charge they had deliberately pulled up, to pull back with them.
Anyone who has held an honest, costly conviction while people around them settled for a comfortable half-measure knows this exact pressure: not reasoned disagreement, but an invitation to match their shortfall with one of your own.
