Nuh 71:6

فَلَمْ يَزِدْهُمْ دُعَآءِىٓ إِلَّا فِرَارًا

“But my invitation increased them not except in flight [i.e., aversion].”

Saheeh International

Essence

Every call Nuh made drove his people further away, and he says so to Allah without pretending otherwise.

A reflection

Did the message fail, or did it work exactly as truth does?

A genuine difficulty sits in this ayah. If a message is really from Allah, shouldn't it draw people toward goodness rather than push them further away? A call that only ever produces flight looks, on the surface, like a call that is not working.

One classical discussion of this exact ayah uses it to make a different point entirely: that the same words, heard by two different people in the very same room, can land completely differently. One hears them and feels drawn. The other hears the identical sentence and feels only the urge to leave. Neither reaction, the sources argue, is manufactured by the listener's will alone in the moment of hearing it. Something about the heart receiving the words was already different before the words arrived.

This is visible in smaller, everyday form. A smoker shown a concerning scan result does not always respond by quitting. Some do. Others, confronted with exactly the evidence that should frighten them into change, smoke more that same evening, as though the fear itself demanded a release the cigarette still offers. The information was accurate. The response it provoked reveals something about the person receiving it, not a flaw in the information.

So the flight Nuh describes is not proof his call was wrong, badly delivered, or somehow counterproductive. It is what happens when true words meet a heart that has already decided, for reasons of its own, that it would rather run than look directly at what is being said. The measure of the message was never going to be how comfortable it felt to hear, any more than a bitter medicine is judged badly made because a frightened patient spits it out rather than swallows it.
