Ali 'Imran 3:4

“Before, as guidance for the people. And He revealed the Criterion [i.e., the Qur’ān]. Indeed, those who disbelieve in the verses of Allāh will have a severe punishment, and Allāh is Exalted in Might, the Owner of Retribution.[115]”

Essence

Guidance first, then a line drawn through the dark, then a warning: and the One who gives it is out of every hand's reach.

A reflection

The panic room and the eagle's crag

A wealthy man has a panic room built into his house. Steel door, its own air supply, a separate phone line. The builder hands him the code. That night he still lies awake listening to the house.

We spend our lives trying to become unreachable. Savings so that a bad year cannot touch us. A reputation so that a rumour cannot. A title so that a complaint goes nowhere. It is the most human project there is: to be ʿazīz.

The root shows what the first hearers pictured. Hard, firm ground was ʿazāz: rain ran off it and hooves could not sink in. A poet called the eagle ʿazīza, because she nests on the highest crag, out of every hand's reach. One commentary gives the sense here: overcoming in His affair, so that nothing prevents Him from carrying out His promise or His threat. Another: unassailable in His protection, vast in His authority.

Set our panic rooms beside that. Our strongest door has a code someone else wrote. Our savings sit in a bank we will never see. Our reputation lives in other people's mouths. We are never out of reach of illness, of time, or of Him. Pride is the belief that we have built the crag. The ego shrinks the moment it admits who actually holds the high ground.

Some will ask why God describes Himself as mighty and able to repay. Does He need to be feared? Nothing in our fear adds to Him. 'If you disbelieve, you and everyone on earth, Allah is free of need, praiseworthy' (14:8). The description is for two kinds of people. The one who thinks his money makes him unreachable needs to hear that Someone is not. And the wronged, who cannot reach the one who wronged them, need to hear that Someone can.

The safest room is not the one you build. It is the One you run to.
