Al-Jinn · Makki · ayah 17 of 28
Al-Jinn 72:17
لِّنَفْتِنَهُمْ فِيهِ ۚ وَمَن يُعْرِضْ عَن ذِكْرِ رَبِّهِۦ يَسْلُكْهُ عَذَابًا صَعَدًا
“So We might test them therein. And whoever turns away from the remembrance of his Lord[1771] He will put into arduous punishment.”
Saheeh International
Essence
The spring itself is the test: abundance shows what was gold in us, and turning from His remembrance threads us into a climb without rest.
A reflection
Nobody calls the bonus a test
Two friends pray at the same mosque. One loses his job in March. Everyone who hears gently tells him the same thing: 'It's a test, brother. Be patient.' The other gets a large bonus in April. Everyone who hears slaps his back: 'Well deserved. Allah has blessed you.' Nobody tells the second man he is being tested.
That is the reading most of us carry. Hardship is the test; blessing is the reward. When things go badly we search ourselves. When they go well we relax.
This ayah turns that round. The previous ayah promised abundant water to those who keep to the way. This one finishes the sentence: 'that We might test them in it'. In it. The test is inside the spring.
The commentators spell it out: to test how they give thanks for what they were granted. One adds that the knowing here is a knowing that makes things visible. Allah does not test to find out. He tests so that what is in us comes into the open. The Quran says it in general terms elsewhere: 'We test you with evil and with good, as a trial' (21:35).
The Prophet ﷺ was sharper still. When wealth arrived in Madinah from Bahrain, his Companions gathered at dawn, hopeful. He smiled, told them to rejoice and hope for good, and then said: 'By Allah, it is not poverty I fear for you. I fear that the world will be spread out for you as it was for those before you. You will compete for it as they did, and it will distract you as it distracted them' (Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim).
Distract. That is the exact danger the second half of this ayah names: turning away from the remembrance of one's Lord. The bonus is not the enemy. Forgetting who sent it is.
So the second friend needs the reminder more than the first. The spring is real. So is the test inside it.
