Al-Jinn 72:5

وَأَنَّا ظَنَنَّآ أَن لَّن تَقُولَ ٱلْإِنسُ وَٱلْجِنُّ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ كَذِبًا

“And we had thought that mankind and the jinn would never speak about Allāh a lie.”

Essence

The jinn confess their old mistake: they believed the lies about Allah because they assumed no one would ever dare to lie about Him.

A reflection

"Nobody would make that up about God"

A grandmother forwards a message every Thursday night. It promises that whoever shares a certain prayer will have their wishes granted before Friday. Asked where it comes from, she is puzzled. 'It's about Allah,' she says. 'Who would lie about that?'

Most of us carry that assumption somewhere. Religious words feel safe. Surely nobody would invent something about God; the stakes are too high, the sin too obvious. So a claim dressed in sacred language gets waved through.

This ayah is the jinn confessing that they made exactly that mistake. We had thought, they say, that neither humans nor jinn would ever speak a lie about Allah. The commentators spell out what followed. Because they assumed nobody would dare, they believed their fool when he said Allah had a consort and a child. One commentator calls the ayah an apology: an excuse offered for having followed him blindly. It took the Quran to show them the lie.

What is striking is how reasonable their assumption sounds. It is almost a compliment to creation: they could not imagine anyone so brazen. But the Quran does not share their innocence. It asks: who does greater wrong than one who invents a lie about Allah (6:21)? It counts among forbidden things that you say about Allah what you do not know (7:33). Lying about Him is not rare enough to be unthinkable. It is common enough to need warning against.

So the worn-smooth assumption runs the wrong way. Sacred language is not a guarantee of truth. It is the most valuable thing there is to counterfeit. The higher the stakes, the more tempting the forgery. That is why a claim about Allah deserves more checking, not less.

The jinn learned this the hard way, and their confession is a gift. It says: we were not stupid, we were trusting, and our trust was used. The grandmother is not foolish either. She is standing where the jinn stood, before the Quran gave them a way to tell.
