Al-Isra 17:15

“Whoever is guided is only guided for [the benefit of] his soul. And whoever errs only errs against it. And no bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another. And never would We punish until We sent a messenger.”

Essence

Guidance profits only the guided, straying costs only the one who strays, no one carries another's load, and none are punished unwarned.

A reflection

He gains nothing; you gain everything

At a family dinner a man in his thirties explains why he stopped praying years ago. 'God doesn't need my prayers. If He's perfect, what difference does it make to Him?' His sister, clearing the plates, says only: 'None. That's the point.'

She has the ayah on her side. Man ihtadā fa-innamā yahtadī li-nafsih: whoever is guided is guided only for his own soul. The innamā narrows it. The benefit does not leak to anyone else, and certainly not upwards. A narration-based commentary says it plainly: the praiseworthy outcome of guidance goes to the one who is guided.

Sahih Muslim preserves a hadith qudsi that says the rest in Allah's own words. My servants, you will never reach harming Me so as to harm Me, nor benefiting Me so as to benefit Me. Were all of you, first and last, men and jinn, like the most God-fearing heart among you, it would add nothing to My kingdom. Were you all as wicked as the most wicked heart, it would take nothing from it. Then comes a line that ties straight back to these ayat. It is only your deeds that I count for you, then repay you in full.

So the brother is right that Allah does not need his prayer. He has drawn the wrong conclusion from it. If worship were a tax paid upwards, a perfect God would indeed have no use for it. But the ayah describes something else: a road whose every benefit lands on the one who walks it.

Look at what people now spend in money and hours chasing a settled heart. Retreats, apps, coaches, silent weekends. The hunger is real and honourable. The Quran names where it is finally fed: hearts find rest in the remembrance of Allah (13:28). And whoever strives, strives only for himself (29:6).

That is also why worship is wider than ritual. The gain of the guided shows up as reverence for Allah's command, and as gentleness with the people across the table.

So the sister's 'that's the point' holds the whole ayah in three words. He needs nothing. That is precisely why every prayer is a gift to the one who prays.
