Al-Muddaththir 74:12
وَجَعَلْتُ لَهُۥ مَالًا مَّمْدُودًا
“And to whom I granted extensive wealth”
Saheeh International
Essence
Wealth was given to him stretched out and ever-growing, and the stretching itself turns out to be the problem.
A reflection
A sum the Quran refuses to name
Early commentary records an unusually wide range of guesses about exactly how much wealth this ayah is describing: a thousand gold coins, four thousand, a fortune in silver weights, an orchard near al-Ta'if whose fruit never stopped through winter or summer, estates stretching between two cities, or simply income arriving reliably every month. None of these figures comes from the ayah itself. All of them are later attempts to pin an exact number onto a word that was never written to carry one.
The word actually used, mamdud, means stretched out, extended, continually added to, whether in amount or in reach. The range of classical guesses is not a failure of the tradition to settle an answer; it is a direct consequence of the ayah's own deliberate vagueness. It was never going to specify the figure, because the figure was never the point. What matters to the passage is the shape of the wealth, open-ended, still growing, with no stated ceiling, not its precise size at any one moment.
This is worth noticing for what it quietly teaches about reading scripture. A reader who goes looking here for forensic financial detail will find endless disagreement and no resolution, because the question itself is the wrong one to bring to this particular word. The ayah is not an account ledger. It is a description of a condition: wealth with no stated edge, growing by its own momentum, independent of any specific sum attached to it.
This also means the ayah speaks across every scale of wealth rather than being addressed only to the exceptionally rich. A reader with a fraction of this man's resources can recognise the same open-ended stretching in a far smaller account, because the word describes a shape, not a size. The specific sum was always going to be different for every reader it eventually reached; the shape it describes was not.
