Al-Muddaththir 74:13

وَبَنِينَ شُهُودًا

“And children present [with him]”

Saheeh International

Essence

Every son present, nothing missing, a whole life gathered close, and still it was not enough for him.

A reflection

One root, three things at once

This root never splits into separate ideas the way a translation forces it to. It joins being present, knowing, and declaring what was seen into a single word every time it is used. Early commentary reads shuhud here along exactly those lines: sons who were present, not sent off travelling for trade the way wealthy households often dispersed their sons and dependants across caravan routes. These sons stayed close, visible, accounted for, gathered rather than scattered.

In a society where a man's standing was measured partly by how many of his own blood could be summoned into a room at short notice, this detail is not incidental colour. It is a specific, recognisable marker of a particular kind of completeness: not merely many sons, but many sons kept near, forming a visible wall of support and loyalty around him that most men, even reasonably prosperous ones, could never assemble. The reports vary on the exact number, ten by one account, thirteen by another, and the disagreement matters less than the shared picture both numbers are pointing at.

What this ayah is building, word by word, is a portrait of a life with no visible gap in it anywhere: wealth without a stated edge in the previous ayah, now sons without absence in this one. The picture is deliberately, almost ostentatiously, complete. That completeness is exactly what the rest of the passage is about to test.
