وَمَهَّدتُّ لَهُۥ تَمْهِيدًا

“And spread [everything] before him, easing [his life].”

Essence

Every single path laid out in front of him was smoothed completely flat, and he never once paused to ask who had actually done the smoothing.

A reflection

The bed prepared for someone who cannot ask for it

This root's plainest picture is domestic and gentle: a mahd is a cradle, the exact spot levelled and softened for an infant who has no power to prepare anything for themselves. A mihad is a bed spread out and smoothed before anyone lies down on it. The verb used here, doubled for emphasis, means doing this kind of levelling thoroughly and completely, leaving nothing rough or unprepared anywhere.

There is something almost tender about applying a cradle's vocabulary to a grown man's entire life circumstances: standing, wealth, family, ease, as though every obstacle he might have stumbled against had been patiently removed in advance by someone else, the way a parent clears a floor before a crawling infant reaches it. He did not pave this ground himself in the way he likely believed he had. It was smoothed in front of him, repeatedly, before he ever arrived to walk across it.

The same root carries a second, more pointed expression elsewhere in the language: mahada li-nafsihi, to prepare good for oneself in advance, usually said of someone storing up good deeds ahead of a day still to come. This man's entire life was one long preparation made for him, by a source outside himself, for a worldly comfort he treated as simply owed. The deeper version of that same preparing, laying something good ahead for the day actually coming, is precisely what he never got round to doing on his own account.
