Al-Mursalat 77:1

وَٱلْمُرْسَلَـٰتِ عُرْفًا

“By those [winds] sent forth in gusts”

Saheeh International

Essence

Allah opens with an oath by forces sent out one after another, obeying Him without being asked twice, whoever they turn out to be.

A reflection

An oath that needs nothing from you

A barrister does not swear an oath in her own courtroom. She has no need to; her word already carries the weight of the court behind it. People swear when they are not yet believed, to borrow credibility they do not yet have.

So the honest question lands early in this surah: why does Allah swear at all? He is believed before He opens His mouth. Nothing stands over Him to vouch for.

Look at what He actually swears by. Not by Himself, but by His own creation, set loose and obeying without delay. Whether this first oath points to the angels carried out on His errands or the winds sent out across the earth, both readings sit in the classical commentaries and the ayah itself never settles which, both agree on the only thing that matters here: something vast and usually invisible to us is entirely at His command.

That is not an oath that borrows credibility. It is a display of it. A head of state inspecting a fleet is not asking the ships to vouch for her; she is showing you what already answers to her. When Allah says wa-l-mursalāti, He is not reaching for proof. He is pointing at what is already His, forces that never once asked why before moving.

Here is where the ego should wince, gently. We spend so much energy trying to be believed: curating, justifying, producing evidence for our own worth. Imagine, just once, needing none of that. Imagine your word so settled that reaching for proof would actually diminish it. That is not arrogance in Allah; arrogance is a creature claiming weight it does not have. In Him it is simply what is true, and the relief is that you were never meant to carry that weight yourself. You are allowed to stop performing your own credibility and let your life, quietly, answer for itself instead.
