Al-Mursalat 77:4
فَٱلْفَـٰرِقَـٰتِ فَرْقًا
“And those [angels] who bring criterion[1816]”
Saheeh International
Essence
The oath names a clean parting, truth from falsehood, and the same root that means this division also names the light Allah places in a mindful heart.
A reflection
A light you are given, not one you build
Farq is a clean parting: hair divided at the scalp, the sea itself standing apart in great walls for Musa's people to walk through, truth separated from falsehood so plainly that no honest observer could mistake one for the other. This fourth oath, on the dominant reading, names either angels bringing down revelation that performs exactly this separation, or that revelation itself, which the Quran elsewhere calls by this very root's name: al-Furqan.
Elsewhere the same root makes a quieter, more personal promise: to those who are mindful of Allah, He will grant a furqan, a discernment, a light by which to tell right from wrong (8:29). Notice what that promise does not say. It does not say the sharp-witted earn this clarity through cleverness, or the well-read through study alone, though both can help. It says the mindful are granted it, as a gift that answers a disposition of the heart rather than a credential.
Most of us quietly credit our own moral clarity to our own intelligence. We assume the reason we can usually tell right from wrong is that we are, on the whole, discerning people, and we extend a certain pride to ourselves for every correct call we make. This ayah, and the promise behind it, suggest a more humbling account: the clean parting you can make between truth and falsehood on your better days is not proof of your own sharpness. It is light lent to you, exactly as Allah lends sight to the eye without the eye manufacturing the light itself. A person who forgets this tends to grow smug about their own judgement; a person who remembers it keeps asking for the light to be renewed, rather than assuming it is now permanently theirs by right.
