Al-Mursalat 77:5

فَٱلْمُلْقِيَـٰتِ ذِكْرًا

“And those [angels] who deliver a message”

Saheeh International

Essence

Here the oath stops arguing over who is meant: by agreement, these are angels casting down a reminder, because some things Allah refuses to leave to guesswork.

A reflection

Not left to work it out alone

Four oaths in, and commentators still argue whether the mursalat were wind or angel, whether the fariqat were angels or the Quran itself. This fifth oath is the one place the argument stops. By agreement among the classical commentators, al-mulqiyat are angels, carrying down a dhikr, a reminder, to the Prophets. No serious alternative reading survives.

That unanimity is itself worth noticing. Allah could, in principle, have left every human being to reconstruct right and wrong entirely through private reasoning, trial, error, and the slow accumulation of hard experience. Instead, at the one point in this oath where the Quran wants total certainty, it names a direct delivery: something carried down, on purpose, to be received, not something a person had to deduce alone from nothing.

There is a quiet blow to pride tucked inside that fact. Many of us would rather have earned our clarity than been handed it, the same way a student would rather solve a problem unaided than be shown the answer. Being told carries a whisper of insufficiency: if I needed telling, was I not capable enough to work it out myself? The ayah answers that quietly wounded pride by making the telling itself the honour. The mulqiyat are not sent to the slow or the foolish alone. They are sent because no one, however sharp, was ever expected to reconstruct the unseen from scratch. Accepting a reminder you did not invent yourself is not a mark of inferior intellect. It is simply what every human being, without exception, actually needed, from the sharpest philosopher to the simplest labourer, and the ayah's unanimity on this one oath is Allah's own way of refusing to let that need be argued away.
