Al-Mursalat 77:9

وَإِذَا ٱلسَّمَآءُ فُرِجَتْ

“And when the heaven is opened”

Saheeh International

Essence

The sky will split open with the very word that elsewhere means relief breaking through distress, as though even this ending carries a crack of mercy inside it.

A reflection

The roof over every empire, cracked open

Every ruler who has ever lived has lived under the same sky, built their throne rooms beneath the same ceiling, dated their reigns by the same sun and moon, and never once been asked permission for any of it. The sky has been the one roof no empire ever had to negotiate for, so constant that it rarely occurs to anyone it was ever held up by anything at all.

Furijat, split open, names the moment that roof cracks. Not repaired, not replaced by a sturdier one, simply opened, the way a crack appears in a wall that was never actually load-bearing in the way everyone assumed. Every throne that ever sat beneath that sky sat beneath something borrowed, and this ayah is the bill arriving.

There is a species of quiet arrogance in how settled we become under things we did not build and could never have built: breathing air we did not manufacture, walking under a sky we did not raise, assuming all of it as simply background to our own importance. The sky splitting is not cruelty toward that arrogance; it is correction, the final demonstration that the roof over every empire, every fortune, every reputation built under it, belonged to its Builder the entire time, on loan, not by right. Humbling as that sounds, it is also the only honest and sane way to stand under any ceiling at all: knowing clearly Whose it actually is, and refusing to mistake mere shelter, however long enjoyed, for ownership that was never truly yours.
