“And made the night as clothing[1823]”

Saheeh International

Essence

Every evening Allah dresses the world in one dark garment that covers, warms and hides, so that you can rest unseen.

A reflection

When the square goes dark

A street performer works a city square on a summer evening. He juggles, he jokes, he gathers a crowd of a hundred. He is very good, and he knows it. Then the light begins to go. Faces blur. People drift towards their buses. No one tells him to stop. The night simply comes down over the square like a cloth over a birdcage, and the show is over.

'And We made the night a garment.' The sources explain the picture simply. The night covers people with its darkness as a garment covers the one who wears it. It wraps them, conceals them and lets them be still after the movement of the day.

Think about the scale of that. No government, no company and no genius has ever been able to switch the night on or off. Every evening, without fail, a single garment is drawn over half the world. Kings and cleaners, the famous and the forgotten, are covered by the same darkness at the same hour.

For the ego this is a quiet correction. Much of our pride is performance: being seen, being noticed, being in the light. The night ends every performance. It makes no exception for the talented. It is a nightly reminder that the stage was never ours, and that the curtain is in other hands.

Is it vanity, then, for Allah to point to the night as His work? The sources read these ayat as evidence and as favour. Allah does not need us to notice the night. He is free of need. We are the ones who need to remember that we cannot even cover ourselves.

The performer packs his clubs into a bag and walks home under the dark. He cannot make the evening come or keep it away. Nor can we. Tonight, when the light goes, let the garment be what it is: a reminder of whose hand draws it, and a permission to stop performing.
