An-Naba 78:11
وَجَعَلْنَا ٱلنَّهَارَ مَعَاشًا
“And made the day for livelihood”
Saheeh International
Essence
The day opens the dark like a river cutting its channel, and hands you back your life and your living, both from Him.
A reflection
Grinding by borrowed light
A young entrepreneur posts a photo from his desk at five in the morning. The lamp is on; outside the window it is still dark. The caption reads: 'While you sleep, I build.' By nine it has four hundred likes. Nobody points out that the real working day, for him and everyone else, began when the sun came up. And he had nothing to do with that.
And We made the day for living, says the ayah. The sources describe the day as made bright and shining. People can go out and come back in it, earn, trade and see to their needs. Night covers; day opens. Neither can be switched on by any human hand.
Our culture loves the story of the self-made worker. We talk about our hustle, our discipline, our long hours. There is real effort in all of that, and effort matters. But every hour of every working life has been lived by a light we did not make, on a timetable we did not set. The builder, the banker and the farmer all start when the day is given to them.
That should shrink the boast a little. Pride says 'I built this'. The ayah quietly adds: in a day that We made, by a light that We sent. The most productive person on earth has never produced a single morning.
Is this Allah seeking our admiration? The sources read it as evidence and as favour. He needs nothing from our work or our thanks. The reminder is for us, so that success does not swell into arrogance, and failure does not sink into despair. The day was a gift before it was a workplace.
The entrepreneur can keep his early starts. But he might change the caption. 'Up before the light, grateful when it comes' would be closer to the truth. It would also be better for the heart that writes it.
