An-Nazi'at 79:28

رَفَعَ سَمْكَهَا فَسَوَّىٰهَا

“He raised its ceiling and proportioned it.”

Saheeh International

Essence

He lifted the roof of the sky with no pole and levelled it without a crack, and no human builder has ever done either.

A reflection

A roof with no leaks

A couple buy an old house with a beautiful slate roof. In the first winter it leaks over the bedroom. A roofer replaces some slates. In the second winter it leaks over the stairs. Another roofer, another bill. By the fifth year they know the names of every roofing firm in town. Every roof built by human hands, however fine, needs mending.

This ayah describes the roof over all of them. Rafaʿa samkahā: He raised its height, its roof. Fa-sawwāhā: and made it level and whole. The sources explain: He made its extent upward lofty, then made it even, smooth and balanced, without rifts, cracks or flaws. One adds that He completed it with everything it needed.

The Quran elsewhere turns this into a challenge. 'Look again: do you see any rift? Then look again and again. Your sight will come back to you humbled and weary' (67:3–4). Human roofs leak in a storm. The sky above them has held since before any roof was built.

The ego is always proud of its buildings: the extension, the office block, the stadium with the sliding roof. There is nothing wrong with building well. But every structure we make needs scaffolding while it goes up and maintenance once it stands. The sky needed neither. The Arabs held up a tent with a pole. The Quran says Allah 'raised the heavens without pillars that you see' (13:2).

A doubt might come to a reflective reader. Is dwelling on the perfection of the heavens simply Allah admiring His own work? The sources present it as proof, not praise-seeking. The next ayat and the earlier ones make the argument plain: the One who raised this can raise you again. He is free of need of the worlds (29:6). The flawless sky is evidence given to us, not applause demanded from us.

Next time rain comes through your ceiling and you are on the phone to a roofer, glance up. The sky has never once needed one.
