An-Nazi'at 79:27
ءَأَنتُمْ أَشَدُّ خَلْقًا أَمِ ٱلسَّمَآءُ ۚ بَنَىٰهَا
“Are you a more difficult creation or is the heaven? He [i.e., Allāh] constructed it.”
Saheeh International
Essence
Doubt He can remake you, and the sky answers: which is harder to build, you or the tent of heaven He pitched above you?
A reflection
The tower from the plane window
An architect designed her city's tallest tower. For five years it filled her days: steel, glass, wind loads, a ribbon-cutting with the mayor. One night, flying home, she looks down as the plane climbs. Her tower is a single pinprick of light among millions. She looks up past the wing. The stars go on, and on, further than she can think.
The surah now turns from Pharaoh back to the deniers, and asks them a simple question. A-antum ashaddu khalqan ami al-samāʾ: are you harder to create, or the sky? He built it.
The sources explain the argument. The deniers doubted that they could be brought back after death. So Allah points them to something they could see every day, far larger and stronger than themselves. The creation of the heavens and the earth is greater than the creation of people (40:57). If He built that, remaking you is not difficult.
The word ashadd comes from a root meaning a knot pulled tight: firmness, strength. Which is the tighter, stronger piece of work? The honest answer shrinks the one answering. A human being, for all his cleverness, is small and fragile beside the sky.
That is where the ego finally has to sit down. We are proud of our towers, our careers, our reputations. None of them registers against the scale of what is above us every night. The architect was right to be proud of her work. She was also right, on that flight, to feel small.
A doubt may occur. Why does Allah keep pointing to the size of what He made? Is this a Creator who needs His work admired? One classical scholar answers that Allah is establishing His proof for the worlds' sake. He points to what is greater, so that people see the lesser is easy. He needs no admiration; He wants no provision from us (51:57). The question is asked so that we can answer it truthfully, and be freed from a doubt.
Look up tonight, and let the sky answer for you.
